The northern portion of western Europe, mostly speaks German, or a dialect close in some sort. This makes sense, considering Germany is in the center, which means the language may have grown around the country and across the borders to other surrounding countries. Then, the southwestern part, including France and Austria, fall into the category of speaking romance languages, including Spanish, French, Italian, and Portugese. In this case, all the romance languages originate in the countries shaded green, which seem to be Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal.
